About Springs not starting

I was at the win on Sunday and one of the things I noticed almost immediately, and kept pointing out to my Dad throughout the game, was that Shawn Springs was being used as the 3rd CB. Smoot seemed to be out there on every play with Rogers and Springs would come in on 3rd downs. The best football beat writer in the world, Jason La Confora, addressed this yesterday in his Monday Morning Half-Back:

I am baffled that in the fourth quarter, while Chris Chambers was picking about Smoot and Rogers, that Springs was on the bench. I guess I get the fact the Skins want to look at their younger corners, and it’s been pretty clear to all parties for a long time that this is probably Springs’s last season here anyway. But still. The dude was making plays and Smoot came real close to costing the Redskins the game on several occasions and was rough all around.

And all the while I can’t help but be baffled by Spring’s standing on the sidelines. Gregg Williams says he wants to keep the guys fresh and rotate and all of that jazz, but ain’t no way I don’t have Springs out there. Heard that after the game Trent Green was asked some of the Skins players what was up with that, ’cause the Dolphins went into the game hoping to pick on the guy not on Shawn’s side, and ended up only facing Springs in the nickel package for the most part. Springs is healthy, and I’d be playing him like heck now.

I too find this weird. If Springs is healthy, and he says he is, then put him out there. Are the coaches saying Rogers and Smoot are better then Springs? That would be news to many I think. Things are not cleared up in Jason’s Redskin Notebook today:

Gibbs said that Springs was not breaking full speed as he normally would and was “holding up a little bit,” although he practiced fully. “I felt better going into that game Sunday than I have in four years,” Springs said. “I don’t know what Coach Gibbs is talking about.”

Well that explains…nothing. Springs says he’s healthy, Coach Gibbs says he doesn’t look like it. I guess the only reasonable conclusion to draw from this is that the coaches think Springs is the 3rd best CB on the roster. Even if he is making $5 million this year.

Bye Lemar

Wow, Lemar Marshall got cut by the Skins today. I didn’t see that coming (he didn’t either). Guy goes from being our staring MLB last year to the streets. Strange too because he’s good on special teams and can play all 3 LB positions (not to mention Marcus Washington is banged up). I imagine he’ll get snatched up pretty quickly. I always liked the guy, wish him well.

Bush league play

I admire the creativity but this play is still kinda bush league. Video after jump.

This is an outrage Peter King

The trouble here is I like Peter King. His Monday Morning Quarterback column is a must read for me. Having said that, I am furious with Mr. King. How dare he rank the Redskins 24th (24th!) in his pre-training camp power rankings?!?!?! That’s an outrage. Here’s what Peter wrote:

I agonized over this one, because I think the Redskins are moving in the right direction. I like young quarterback Jason Campbell. I like Joe Gibbs’ ability to make owner Dan Snyder a more patient man and I like — really like — the addition of tackling machine London Fletcher-Baker. I could see the ‘Skins winning 10, but maybe in 2008, not 2007.

Damn right we are moving in the right direction. Look, I know we have a young quarterback and a defense that underachieved tremendously last year, not to mention injuries to our starting RB. But how are we worse then the New York Giants, a team that starts Eli Manning and lost its franchise running back when Tiki Barber retired? There are other ridiculous teams ahead of the Skins but I really don’t have the stomach to handle this anymore. At least we can say everyone’s sleeping on the Skins this year; its always more fun to win when no one expects it.

Updating a previous post concerning LaVar Arrington’s motorcycle accident, he appears to be doing well and did not in fact break his leg.

LaVar in motorcycle crash

Just got this gchatted to me from my buddy The Cooler. Not good news, hope he’s alright:

LaVar Arrington, a former member of the Washington Redskins and New York Giants, has been seriously hurt in a motorcycle crash Monday afternoon.

Prince George’s County Fire tells WTOP that Arrington is in serious condition after the crash near Route 50 and the Capital Beltway.

Channel 9 reports Arrington was taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center.

Arrington was drafted by the Redskins out of Penn State in 2000. He was cut by the New York Giants this year after suffering a season-ending foot injury.

Jason La Canfora has more at the WaPo’s Redskins Insider.

The insanity

Today’s rumor concerning the Skins? Well apparently we are meeting with JaMarcus Russell….even though we have Jason Campbell. Shoot me now:

What might be a bit unusual, however, is that the Washington Redskins are one of the teams that has arranged a visit with the former LSU quarterback.

Russell is scheduled to meet with Redskins coaches and officials on April 10 as part of his pre-draft tour of NFL franchises, ESPN.com has confirmed. But the Redskins already have a young quarterback in two-year veteran and former first-round choice Jason Campbell, and Campbell is expected to be their long-term starter.

That raises questions about the Washington brass’ motive in arranging a visit with Russell.

Ok what are we doing here? I like Russell as much the next guy (the guy’s got a cannon) but we already gave up a shit ton to get Campbell. Isn’t this the whole Briggs thing all over again? I’m aware that these weeks leading up to the Draft are full of lies and rumors but with the Redskins history of trading picks left and right I’m still on edge.
