Michael Wilbon suffers a heart attack

Michael Wilbon on PTI set

Sad news today as apparently Washington Post columnist and PTI co-host Michael Wilbon suffered a heart attack yesterday. It was a mild one thankfully and he’s resting in bed at home so that’s good news. Despite ripping Wilbon over his comments after Sean Taylor’s death, I really do like the guy. I’ve grown up reading him in the Washington Post and watching him on PTI and despite his occasionally obnoxious attitude, he’s better then 99% of the other people in his profession. Best wishes to you sir.

The Matthew Berry Award for “Most obvious ‘Eff You!’ to fantasy owners”

Simmons:

How ’bout Vincent Jackson and Maroney turning it on in the playoffs and becoming the fantasy forces everyone thought they would be in August? What’s the over/under on fantasy owners who watched Jackson make his umpteenth big catch in the Pats game, listened to Phil Simms talk about what a weapon Jackson had become, then stood up and held both middle fingers toward their TV? I say 50,000.

I am one of the 50,000.

Joe Gibbs has resigned

Well this is a bit of a shock. I, like everyone it seems, kind of assumed that Coach Gibbs would be back next year. He had one year left on his original contract, which he’d always maintained he planned on fulfilling, and there had been recent rumors of him being offered a 2-year contract extension. So much for that, in a press conference today at 3pm he’s going to announce he’s resigning as coach and as team president. There are various reports that Coach Gibbs will stay on in some sort of role with the team as a consultant to Dan Synder.

Its unclear where things go from here. Gregg Williams is the obvious choice to replace Coach Gibbs and according to Jason La Canfora he has the support of current players:

The strong sentiment from the players and people here I spoke to today is that Gregg Williams should get the job, and that’s coming from offensive and defensive players alike.

One former Redskin, who speaks daily to many of his former teammates, said: “It has to be Gregg, there’s no doubt about it. If they go from outside guys will be pissed. Unless they want to tear up the team and go with a different group of guys, it has to be Gregg.”

Spoke to some people close to Russ Grimm, a former Redskin and longtime esteemed NFL assistant, who said his current team, Arizona, had not been contacted by the Redskins. Of course, we are very early in the process so things could change. Bill Cowher, former Super Bowl coach with Pittsburgh, will be a name everyone talks about as well.

Jason Reid just spent some time alone with starting WR Antwaan Randle El, who played on Cowher’s championship team in Pittsburgh. Randle El voiced strong support for Gregg Williams: “I want the best coach for the job and Gregg is certainly at the top of the list, no doubt. I would love to see him get it just ’cause we’ve gotten going with the crew that we have here. I would love to see Gregg keep it and let’s keep our offensive coordinator. Let’s keep all that intact.”

The other name naturely being floated around is Bill Cower. He’d want total control and a lot of money, but he is a proven winner. I guess if I had to pick I’d give Williams a shot. He’s earned it with the way his defense has played while he’s been here and the players like him. Be interesting to see what happens with Al Saunders and whether or not a GM gets added to the mix.

Also, I suffered through listening to a bit of “Mike & Mike” on my way to work and they kept mentioning Pete Carroll. Please Baby Jesus don’t hire a college coach Mr. Synder. Steve Spurrior, Bobby Petrino; don’t do that to us.

Who knows Cooley better, his finacee or Portis?

Never thought about that

Interesting question asked in today’s Wizards/NBA WaPo chat:

Washington, D.C.: Strange question, but how do they decide which basket the teams will shoot at in the first half? Is it visitor’s choice?

Michael Lee: Typically, it’s the visiting team’s choice, but they usually respect the home team and let them start on whatever side they usually begin the game.

You learn something new everyday kids.

Tejada sent to the Astros

Its about time. Miguel Tejada has been rumored to be gone all off season and now he finally is: sent to the Astros for a package of 5 players (Luke Scott, Matt Albers, Troy Patton, Dennis Sarfate, and Mike Costanzo). I’ve only ever heard of Scott and he’s a 29 year old outfielder, which doesnt excite me.

Tim Dierkes says this though:

That’s a fine haul for Baltimore. The Astros pretty much cleaned out their farm system for two years of an average-hitting third baseman. The average NL 3B had an .804 OPS in ‘07; Tejada was at .799 in the AL. I know some readers think I’m an Astro-hater but that’s not the case. I just think they gave up way too much here. Patton was ranked their third best prospect by Baseball America, Costanzo sixth. Scott is a cheap quality regular, and Albers was third on the team’s 2007 top prospect list.

That’s comforting but I feel similar to Roch:

My first reaction is one of disappointment, but I also know it’s unfair. I like Scott and probably will like him more in the coming months. But this isn’t exactly a sexy trade. It’s nowhere near being a blockbuster.

Obviously I don’t know how serious discussions got with the Angels but Brandon Wood or Nick Adenhart would have seemed like a better haul then the above Astros. Oh well.

Camden Chat passes along this link to John Sickel’s review of the Astro’s farm system for 2008, looks like we got their #1 and #5 prospects. Thats good.

Redskins playoff chances

The man Jason La Canfora links to this guy’s site breaking down the Skins’s chances of making the playoffs. To wit:

If the Skins go 3-0 they have a 92% of making it.
If they go 2-0-1 they have a 50.6% chance
If they go 2-1 15.1% chance
If they go 1-1-1 its 0.6% chance.

And so on. Basically they win out, there’s a good chance they make it. Unfortunately we close out the season @Giants, @Vikings and at home with the Cowboys. I don’t want to be a downer but 1-2, maybe 2-1 at the best, sounds more likely then 3-0. Stranger things have happened though.

DeShawn dunks on Jefferson

Having been at the game myself I can attest to the fact that DeShawn’s dunk over Richard Jefferson was even more nasty then this video depicts. So nasty that I forgive him for getting a tech for taunting.

I would say I totally and completely agree with Dominic McGuire, as quoted by Agent Steinz:

“It was appropriate,” Dominic McGuire said. “You’ve got to stare somebody down after you dunk on them like that. You’ve got to stare at them like that.”

Amen.

QB Todd Collins is Peter King’s Co-Offensive POY. Going to need more performances like Thursday out of him if we have any hope of making the playoffs.
