Never thought about that

Interesting question asked in today’s Wizards/NBA WaPo chat:

Washington, D.C.: Strange question, but how do they decide which basket the teams will shoot at in the first half? Is it visitor’s choice?

Michael Lee: Typically, it’s the visiting team’s choice, but they usually respect the home team and let them start on whatever side they usually begin the game.

You learn something new everyday kids.

If gambling were legal….#2

Suns/Sonics Over 223

Record: 1 for 3

Example # 129,879 of why I shouldn’t gamble

Maybe gambling (if it were legal) on the NBA is out: of the three bets I made last night only one (the one I bet the least on naturally) came through. Sigh.

Further proof the Cowboys are dumb

This story is a couple weeks old but you know what? Stories about how dumb the Dallas Cowboys are don’t ever lose their freshness. Here’s what happened: The Dallas Cowboys don’t own the domain name “cowboys.com”, someone else does. Dallas has “DallasCowboys.com”, which of course makes sense but in all likelihood they are losing out on a significant amount of traffic by not having “cowboys.com” as well. . Recently though the domain was put up for sale and the Cowboy’s thought they had it won…except they thought they were buying it for $275 when the real price was $275,000:

Rumors are circulating that the sale for the domain name Cowboys.com will not be moving forward. The domain name brought in a $275,000 bid from a phone-in bidder at the recent TRAFFIC domain live auction in Hollywood, Florida. The bidder had been earlier identified to be a representative from the Dallas Cowboys NFL team. An inside source confirmed with DomainNameNews that the deal began to fall apart over a misunderstanding with the bidder on what the bid of “275? actually meant. It appears the bidder thought they were buying the domain for $275.00 rather than $275,000.

Ah yes, the difference between $275 and $275,000 is, to say the least, quite large. Quite a mix-up. Never fear though dear reader, this story has a happy ending: Some other people ended up paying $370,000 for “cowboys.com” and Dallas had to go home empty-handed. Serves them right.

If gambling were legal….

…then I would have the following bets in play tonight

1. Wizards, -2.5
2. Bulls, +2.5
3. Sonics/Nuggets, over 216.5

Quote of the Day

The guy is an idiot. I dropped my bat. It kind of freaked me out. I was upset they took him out of the game. He is good to hit. He’s 9-15. The guy [stinks].

Dustin Pedroia, to reporters, on Daniel Cabrera who nearly hit him in the head with a fastball causing benches to clear in last night’s Red Sox win over the O’s

I said I’d never talk about it but….

Even though I meant it when I said I’d never talk about The Game That Shall Not Be Mentioned….I have to break that vow (for this post only!) just because there have been some interesting tidbits of info that I’ve read since and I might as well mention them. To wit:

-Wes Littleton actually got a save in the game. Littleton entered the game in the 7th (when the score was 14-3) and was awarded a save. This is absurd, isn’t this up to the scorekeepers discretion? (via With Leather)

- Via The Big Lead, the great Ken Rosenthal (former Baltimore Sun employee, by the by) used The Game That Shall Never Be Mentioned Again as a good opportunity to absolutely destroy the O’s.

Good times.

Amazing half time show

Having gone to many, many sporting events in my life, I can say, without a doubt, that this lady on her unicycle (who I’ve seen do her act twice in person at the Verizon Center) is by far the best. You can tell she’s good because when she was doing her thing everyone was watching her, there was no going to get food or stretching going on. Enjoy. Simply amazing.

This might be the greatest accomplishment I’ve ever seen at a sporting event.

One of the better movie mashups I’ve ever seen.
