Joe Gibbs has resigned

Well this is a bit of a shock. I, like everyone it seems, kind of assumed that Coach Gibbs would be back next year. He had one year left on his original contract, which he’d always maintained he planned on fulfilling, and there had been recent rumors of him being offered a 2-year contract extension. So much for that, in a press conference today at 3pm he’s going to announce he’s resigning as coach and as team president. There are various reports that Coach Gibbs will stay on in some sort of role with the team as a consultant to Dan Synder.

Its unclear where things go from here. Gregg Williams is the obvious choice to replace Coach Gibbs and according to Jason La Canfora he has the support of current players:

The strong sentiment from the players and people here I spoke to today is that Gregg Williams should get the job, and that’s coming from offensive and defensive players alike.

One former Redskin, who speaks daily to many of his former teammates, said: “It has to be Gregg, there’s no doubt about it. If they go from outside guys will be pissed. Unless they want to tear up the team and go with a different group of guys, it has to be Gregg.”

Spoke to some people close to Russ Grimm, a former Redskin and longtime esteemed NFL assistant, who said his current team, Arizona, had not been contacted by the Redskins. Of course, we are very early in the process so things could change. Bill Cowher, former Super Bowl coach with Pittsburgh, will be a name everyone talks about as well.

Jason Reid just spent some time alone with starting WR Antwaan Randle El, who played on Cowher’s championship team in Pittsburgh. Randle El voiced strong support for Gregg Williams: “I want the best coach for the job and Gregg is certainly at the top of the list, no doubt. I would love to see him get it just ’cause we’ve gotten going with the crew that we have here. I would love to see Gregg keep it and let’s keep our offensive coordinator. Let’s keep all that intact.”

The other name naturely being floated around is Bill Cower. He’d want total control and a lot of money, but he is a proven winner. I guess if I had to pick I’d give Williams a shot. He’s earned it with the way his defense has played while he’s been here and the players like him. Be interesting to see what happens with Al Saunders and whether or not a GM gets added to the mix.

Also, I suffered through listening to a bit of “Mike & Mike” on my way to work and they kept mentioning Pete Carroll. Please Baby Jesus don’t hire a college coach Mr. Synder. Steve Spurrior, Bobby Petrino; don’t do that to us.

Redskins playoff chances

The man Jason La Canfora links to this guy’s site breaking down the Skins’s chances of making the playoffs. To wit:

If the Skins go 3-0 they have a 92% of making it.
If they go 2-0-1 they have a 50.6% chance
If they go 2-1 15.1% chance
If they go 1-1-1 its 0.6% chance.

And so on. Basically they win out, there’s a good chance they make it. Unfortunately we close out the season @Giants, @Vikings and at home with the Cowboys. I don’t want to be a downer but 1-2, maybe 2-1 at the best, sounds more likely then 3-0. Stranger things have happened though.

QB Todd Collins is Peter King’s Co-Offensive POY. Going to need more performances like Thursday out of him if we have any hope of making the playoffs.

RIP Sean Taylor

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Sean Taylor passed away early this morning in a hospital in Miami. Not much to say really. My heartfelt condolences to his girlfriend, his one-year-old daughter, and the rest of his family. He will be missed. Wore his jersey to work today.

Wilbon cold as ice on Sean Taylor

If you’ve been reading the comments over at Redskins Insider you know some people are upset over WaPo columnist Michael Wilbon’s comments in a Chat House today. I’m not sure if Wilbon was fully aware of the severity of Taylor’s situation but reading Wilbon comes off pretty heartless in some of his responses. To wit:

McLean, Va.: Will your opinion of Taylor change if this does not turn out to be a random incident (e.g. home invasion)?

Michael Wilbon: No…People’s opinions are shaped by the way they’ve grown up, the way they see the world, what they know about the world the person in question grew up in, etc. Sean Taylor isn’t the only guy I know who fits his general profile. I’ve known guys like Taylor all my life, grew up with some. They still have shades of gray and shouldn’t be painted in black and white…I know how I feel about Taylor, and this latest news isn’t surprising in the least, not to me. Whether this incident is or isn’t random, Taylor grew up in a violent world, embraced it, claimed it, loved to run in it and refused to divorce himself from it. He ain’t the first and won’t be the last. We have no idea what happened, or if what we know now will be revised later. It’s sad, yes, but hardly surprising.

Italics mine. From all accounts this is absolutely wrong. Everything I’ve read and heard today from Redskins players and coaches has said that Taylor had changed, for the better, ever since he became a father 18 months ago. Also, from what we know, this was a home invasion, which, at least to me, is pretty much always a “surprising” event.

Here’s another snippet from the chat, and to my mind, the one that reflects the worst on Wilbon:

Columbia, Md.: What makes you think that Taylor was still embracing his old ways? Every thing we have heard from the Redskins and Portis is that this is a new Sean. Apparently the birth of his child really helped to straighten him out. Is this contrary to what you know?

Michael Wilbon: Sorry, but I’n not in the habit of having comapanies with their own public relations agenda tell me about black men and what they feel or don’t feel. Pardon me if I’m not that easy.

Generally I admire Wilbon’s ability to cut through the bullshit but lets be honest here: Wilbon doesnt know what he’s talking about. Sean Taylor is notorious for not talking to the media, so Wilbon knows him so well as to judge him like this….how? OK fine, Wilbon isn’t trusting the PR people for insight on Sean but then where’s he getting his own insight? From who?

One last bit:

Pittsburgh: Still in shell shock about this Taylor situation, makes everything else seem trivial. I haven’t read any articles about the game or reaction, but do you think these close losses are encouraging to Jason Campbell, knowing it just a matter of time and experience before it all comes together?

Michael Wilbon: Again, I’m not the least bit surprised about the Taylor episode…Why would I be considering his history, even since he joined the Redskins?

Again, there’s nothing wrong with this per se, it just seems like a very, very cold reaction to what all accounts seems to be a tragic incident. I guess this stands out more for the lack of compassion and matter-of-factness then anything.

P.S. I’ve heard Wilbon kept up this line of thought on PTI but missed the show. Will post video if I get it.

Latest on Taylor

Still all sorts of rumors/news flying around about Sean. Hearing he went through 6 hours of surgery and is now in a coma. Apparently the bullet passed near, or might have hit, his femoral artery and he lost alot of blood. Best place for updates by far is WaPo Skins beat writer Jason LaConfora’s Redskins Insider.

Sean Taylor shot

Jesus Christ, forget about yesterday’s pathetic loss, breaking news is that Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was shot at his home in Miami by an intruder last night. Details are sketchy but he was apparently shot in the groin and reports are that he is in “extremely critical condition” and “fighting for his life“. Thoughts go out to Sean and his family. More as news comes in.

The safeties on one blogger’s “All 25 or Under Team”…..Sean Taylor and LaRon Landry. Amen brother.

Quote of the Day

The common mistake I made was when they bring a guy in front of you and sit him down and the quarterback looks at you and you don’t realize there’s a guy behind you and he just wants you to come up so he can throw that thing behind you. So you just have to be like a kung fu master just feeling it and kind of drift back.
