Don’t trade for Taylor

I believe today is the NFL trading deadline and for the most part I hope the Skins aren’t involved in anything (unless it involves getting an O-lineman for a low draft pick). Profootballtalk.com’s Mike Florio proposed a trade idea: trade for Jason Taylor of the Dolphins:

5. Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor to the Redskins.

The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year is languishing in Miami on one of the worst teams in franchise history. The Redskins are improving significantly on defense but could use a sack specialist who consistently can put heat on the quarterback.

The kicker on this one is the Redskins would overpay for Taylor — in the form of draft picks to the Dolphins and cash to the player. This could be the best chance the franchise has had under owner Dan Snyder to make some noise in the playoffs, and having a strong pass rush would go a long way toward winning in January.

Yeah no, I’m against this. Would I like Jason Taylor? Of course, but at the right price and you know the Skins would have to (or just would because they always do) overpay to get him. Again, we need help on the offensive line, we don’t need a pass rusher. In fact our defense has been our strength this year, giving up only 5 touchdowns in 5 games. Andre Carter is playing really well, living up to the big deal he signed before last season and young Demetric Evans has been playing well. We don’t need Jason Taylor (though we’d take him) and we certainly don’t need to be shelling out more draft picks/millions of dollars to get him.

Welcome aboard Pete

The Skins have traded for disgruntled Jets guard Pete Kendall. Kendell’s clearly here to fill the gaping whole at LG but our man La Confora has this to say:

Also, just so everyone knows, Gibbs refused to concede the painfully obvious - that Pete Kendall instantly becomes the best left guard they have and was acquired to start. Joe says he was traded for just to make the team better and that he can play multiple positions and not to read too much into it. Heck, he can even play tackle. Says Wade won’t necessarily switch to guard (although Todd is expecting/hoping that’s the case) and that the move was not necessarily related to their inability to find a starting caliber left guard. Also, getting Kendall has nothing to do with almost losing Campbell for the season Saturday night.

Alrighty then. Whatever.

I do know this - it doesn’t make any sense to trade for an aging starting guard, when you have a serious void at left guard, pay him $5 million and then put him on the bench behind guys who are not ready to start at this level. And surely it doesn’t make any sense to take a guy who spent most of his 12 year career at left guard and start him ahead of Jansen, Samuels, Rabach or Thomas … so draw you’re own conclusions.

Like Jason said, whatever. Coach Gibbs doesnt want JC getting killed back there so clearly Kendall will be playing.
